The Sudan National Discourse Forum joined the Horn of Africa Regional Environment Network (HoA-REC&N) to strengthen and advocate for initiatives related to environmental conservation and natural resource management.

The HoA-REC&N was established in 2006 through the support from the government of the Kingdom of the Royal Netherlands. The HoA-REN focuses on environmental concerns and sustainable development options within the Horn of Africa. The Network promotes more than 40 higher learning institutions and research centres, endogenous civil society and community-based organizations in Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan and Sudan. The Network linked initiatives are to enhance environmental governance and management, contribute to sustainable development, and improve livelihoods within the region.  The Network is housed in the University of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The mission and vision of HoA-REN are realized through the three partnership programs. The Climate Resilience Partnership Program implements projects focusing on climate change adaptation and mitigation, sustainable energy including Clean Development Mechanisms (CDM) and voluntary pro-poor carbon projects. The Social Ecological Resilience Partnership Program deals with ecosystem conservation and management and rehabilitation of degraded ecosystems. The Environmental Governance and Education Partnership Program aspires to improve environmental governance at global, regional, national and local levels; mainstream environment and sustainability in education systems, and facilitate demand-driven action research.

The Horn of Africa has faced high levels of environmental degradation as a result of two factors; these are: - global climatic changes and human activities affecting natural resources and land use. Rainfall over the last half century has become more erratic, temperatures are rising, and drought events have become more frequent. At the same time large areas across the region have seen land degraded through deforestation, desertification, soil erosion, and loss of biodiversity and vegetation.

The effects of this degradation have been devastating in some areas, leading to food shortages; water and energy crises, resource based conflicts, and increased poverty. There is little doubt that unmitigated environmental deterioration poses a significant risk to human security in the Horn of Africa.

The Sudan National Discourse Forum (SNDF) is a member of the Sudan Chapter of the HoA-REN Network.  The Sudan Chapter is now in the process of implementing a project titled: “Increasing the Adaptive Capacity of Khor El Teena Landscape to the Impacts of Climate Change”.  The project will be implemented in Bara Locality, North Kordofan state.  The overall objective of the project is to improve the eco system based adaptation of the landscape of Khor El Teena area.

The Sudan National Discourse Forum (SNDF) is a national Network of Civil Society Organizations which was established in 2003. SNDF is one of the eleven National Discourse Forums (NDFs) within the Nile riparian countries that constitute the Nile Basin Discourse (NBD). The SNDF endeavours to establish suitable mechanisms that would ensure effective participation of the Nile communities in development processes through the establishment of Local Discourse Forums along the Nile and its tributaries.
